Why are occupational health assessments important?

Performing occupational health assessments for relevant employees ensures that you are in compliance with health and safety regulations. They are crucial for personnel who perform safety critical tasks in high-risk areas. Furthermore, they are a mandatory requirement in industries such as utilities, construction and rail. For example, for the rail industry, we provide Network Rail PTS medical assessments under the RISQS Scheme. So in this case, it is important that the occupational health assessment performed, complies with the competence specific medical fitness requirements for Network Rail.

In addition, the general health of employees is also important. Occupational health assessments can also help ensure that standards are in place for the workforce in terms of fitness to work. In turn, this can reduce the risk of a work-related illness or injury, and increase productivity. What happens at an occupational health assessment?

Occupational health assessments are mandatory in many industries. We offer a full range of pre-placement and periodic occupational health assessments. Many are industry specific and performed at nationwide medical centres, local clinics, or onsite at your location. In summary, occupational health assessments will often contain some of the following aspects:

• Audiometric testing (hearing).
  
• Lung function assessment (Spirometry). This is optional and additional costs may apply.
• HAVs (Hand Arm Vibration).
• Vision testing, including distance, colour and visual field.
• Blood testing and urinalysis, e.g. diabetes and protein check.
• Cardiovascular health e.g. blood pressure.
• Balance, mobility and co-ordination e.g. Romberg test.
• General health e.g. BMI.
• Occupational hygiene (Environmental monitoring including noise, dust, vibration).
• Occupational drug and alcohol testing.
• In addition, a range of other assessments such as, Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Cold Store, Crane Operator, Skin, etc.

Depending on the outcome of the assessment, follow-up may be required if industry specific medical fitness standards have not been met.

What occupational health assessments do Crystal Health Group offer?

Due to demand, we offer two main types of occupational health assessments. Rail medical assessments and the safety critical medical assessment.

Rail medical assessments

Our services are fully compliant with Network Rail competence specific medical fitness requirements. These are approved under the Rail Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS). We provide a full-range of specialist rail medicals including:

• Competence specific medical fitness medicals including PTS medical assessments, COSS, IWA and Signallers and Cross Keepers etc.
• Train Driver and Train Movement medicals.
• Pre-placement.
• Periodic medicals.

Safety critical medical assessments

The safety critical medical is normally associated with the construction industry. However, we now provide this medical to a range of safety critical industries.

The safety critical medical includes:

• Medical assessment for safety critical workers.
• Pre placement questionnaire.
• General health/lifestyle assessment.
